reflection and refraction

well, concluding the whole year on the 31st of december is the last thing you actually want to do. by now, most of the year has been forgotten already. therefore, i shall try my best to recollect all my foggiest memories of what happened in 2009.

firstly, i would have to admit that 2009 was a pretty tough year for me, both mentally and physically. accademically, year 4 has been a lot more challenging as compared to the previous few years, but it was still manageable after all. it seemed gradual at first, but sleeping later and later started to become a habit with more procastination and hmoework at the same time. i used to sleep at 10.30pm. now, i sleep only after 12 midnight but still wake up at the same time. 7.5 hours of sleep down to six... thank God for all the strength and support he has given me throughout this whole year. without Him, i think i would have shriveled up and rotted long ago.

well, my mottto this year was 'to be better than i was the day before' (scarily from naruto but still... last years was better. dont see dont hear dont bother dont care) i guess i have improved in some areas, but maybe i have slid back in some as well. okay, so i shall list what i have learnt so far throughout this year.

1) 406 is a lot more interesting than you think it is. Everyone has their own interesting areas. It’s just whether you want to discover them or not. Thanks people for all the memories you have given me throughout this year. I think our class is actually quite bonded and we get along quite well together. Yay. P.S. ( I was thinking of doing dedications on the notes section in facebook but never got round to doing so.)

2) Music is a form of enjoyment, not just a display of skill and creativeness. Kind of obvious isn’t it? well, but it was a little hard for me to grasp, especially during my grade 8 piano exam. No doubt technical ability i.e. playing all the notes correctly and using the right expressions etc are important, but more importantly, the piece has to be enjoyed. Its kind of like having a feel for the piece. This was why I especially liked the Chopin piece, which is very emotional. To me, it conveyed a kind of sad, bitter sweet feeling to the piece, with many emotional ups and downs like how a person would feel after losing a loved one. (people who have better musical background than me or disagree or whatever can ignore this. Im just saying this from a personal point of view.)

3) I discovered the wonders of Facebook. At wasting your time, that is.

4) Hard work and discipline is important, however, proper guidance is also needed sometimes in order to improve further and not reach a plateau. It seems training by myself can only take me so far. Eee…

5) Mentor is boss.

6) Being a mentor rep sucks

7) Try to think more positively and things will be a lot better than you thought it would be.

8) Math needs practice. Even the easy parts of it. (for me at least)

9) Never take MATH HONOURS if you suck at math

10) My perfect pitch never existed. I can only hear chords in C, D and F keys.

11) Knowing only A,B,C,D,E,F,G minor and major chords allows you to play most pop songs

12) A $100 guitar will never sound as nice as a $3000 Taylor one. So much for my insistence that all guitars sound the same.

13) Stretching everyday does not make you more flexible if you don’t push yourself.

14) Breakdancing isn’t as tough as most people think it is. I just don’t have the space to practice and learn.

15) Speaking English is more effective in Hokkaido as compared to my horrendous Jap. ( I only know a few phrases.)

16) Art sometimes requires technique as well.

17) Addidas shoes suck

18) Spike shoes are expensive.

19) Never agitate monkeys, especially when they are in a group. The alpha male came after me.

20) English cats are fat

21) The vertical marathon is painful if you take it seriously.

22) Having Microsoft word 2007 is useful. Now people have to bug you instead of you bugging them for the .doc copy.

23) SJWP sucks. A more focused project is needed.

24) Cat repellent is sold in Japan

25) Chinese is a lot easier to speak when you finish your O level exams

26) Twister is fun, until someone farts

27) One manga is as distracting as facebook is. Limit youself to only a handful off mangas.

28) Waiting for monthly mangas is painful

29) I hate colour drawings because I can’t do them

30) Chem is physics without thinking and math is physics without purpose. But I find physics has no point anyway.

31) A good thesis statement is needed in every essay

32) Teachers may ignore your evidences in essays sometimes for unknown reasons.

33) Never do swipes without shoes on.

34) Maple sucks the life out of you

35) Excessive consumption of mints is a good form of laxitative.

36) Prayer, as well as trust and faith in God are important in everyday life.

37) Learn to be less impatient and more understanding

38) Poking sleeping people is not effective sometimes.

39) Recycling wrapping paper is fun

40) Killing slugs with salt is fun.

41) Never oppose authority, even if they are wrong.

42) Reading the whole bible throughout the year can be a good form of QT

The buck stops here.
